Editorial Opportunities at Yarnswoggle
Literary Editors and Copy Editors

Yarnswoggle is seeking skilled, detail-oriented editors to join our growing literary community. We are building a network of editors who value strong storytelling, clarity of voice, and thoughtful collaboration with writers. These are independent contractor positions, with compensation paid per project.

Position one – Role Overview

Literary Editors work closely with authors on the substance and structure of their writing. This includes narrative development, pacing, tone, and thematic coherence.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate manuscripts for structure, clarity, and narrative strength
  • Provide detailed editorial feedback on:
    • plot and organization
    • character development
    • pacing and flow
    • thematic consistency
  • Suggest revisions while preserving the author’s voice
  • Communicate clearly and constructively with authors

Ideal Qualifications

  • Strong background in literature, writing, or publishing
  • Experience with memoir, literary nonfiction, or fiction preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high-level developmental feedback
  • Excellent written communication skills

Role Two – Copy Editor

Copy Editors focus on the technical precision of a manuscript, ensuring correctness, consistency, and readability.

Responsibilities

  • Edit for:
    • grammar, punctuation, and spelling
    • sentence clarity and readability
    • consistency in style and formatting
  • Apply appropriate style guidelines (e.g., Chicago Manual of Style)
  • Maintain the author’s voice while improving clarity and correctness
  • Prepare manuscripts for publication-ready quality

Ideal Qualifications

  • Strong command of English grammar and usage
  • Experience in copy editing or proofreading manuscripts
  • Familiarity with standard style guides (Chicago preferred)
  • High attention to detail and consistency

Requirements(both positions)

  • Must be an active Yarnswoggle member
  • Ability to meet deadlines and communicate reliably
  • Commitment to professionalism and respectful collaboration
  • Experience working with authors is strongly preferred

Compensation and Engagement Terms

  • Editors are engaged as independent contractors
  • Compensation is paid per individual editing project
  • Rates may vary depending on project scope and complexity

IRS Reporting

  • Editors will receive a Form 1099 if annual earnings meet IRS reporting thresholds
  • The threshold for 2025 is $600
  • This threshold is scheduled to increase to $2,000 in 2026
